Hobie Mirage Revolution 13 Review
Not everyone has a cool two grand to drop on a new kayak. But then, there are some people who do, and those people need to seriously consider handing over that cold hard cash in exchange for a Hobie Mirage Revolution 13.
The first thing you need to know about this kayak is that it would be completely and utterly wasted on still or slow moving water. That would literally be the equivalent of a 90-year-old Sunday driver buying a Lamborghini – a total travesty, and a waste of some beautiful engineering. This is meant to tackle the most boisterous of waves, to glide like a shark though the choppy foam, at one with the sea where you become the predator of the depths.
Why Paddle, When You Can…
The main feature you absolutely must hear about for this kayak is the hands-free propulsion. Hands-free propulsion – also technically known as pedaling- is, in fact, a highly innovative factor of this kayak, for two main reasons:
- The first is that it allows for hands-free movement, giving you more time and space toactually fish. Fishing really is much easier when you have both hands free.
- The second is that the speed you can get from pedaling is ridiculous and makes sailing into the wind a hundred times easier – you literally glide straight through adverse weather, as if 50mph winds were no big deal at all.
Another highly relevant factor when looking to purchase a fishing kayak is storage. And there’s no point in having storage and not enough capacity. Being able to handle up to 350lbs should be more than enough of a weight limit for whatever big bad fish you bring home for dinner, and you’re absolutely going to need space for the mighty beasts you’ve wrestled with and emerged victoriously. This kayak has not compromised any space at all. There are three cargo holds altogether – a covered bow hatch, a space mid-ship, and another in the rear with bungee ties. It’s highly unlikely that you’re going to need more space for your catch than what’s provided. There are also twist and seal hatches to keep whatever you take with you safe and dry, whatever the weather.
There are dual rod holders, ensuring you have plenty of opportunities to fish and some options when it comes to setting up. And once set up, you can fish for hours should you wish, all whilst sitting very comfortably. The seat back, the bottom, the height, and the lumbar of the padded seat are all adjustable, so you can change the settings of the seat to suit you throughout the day. And at 28.5 inches wide, Hobie have perfected the magic balancing act of stability and streamlined speed – you’ll be steady and secure in this kayak, while you’ll also move faster than you thought possible.
There’s also a retractable rudder system, a built-in transducer, a cup-holder, and if you really want to see how fast this baby can go, there’s the option (one of several options actually) of a sail kit, which really gives the vessel some power.
- Hands free kayaking
- Maximum space and storage
- Capability over the roughest of waves
- The seat area can hold some water
- At 88lbs fully rigged, it’s pretty heavy
Overall, this is absolutely the mystical, magical beast that really can handle the big waves while still moving quickly and having loads of storage space. At $2499, it’s an investment, but it’s one you absolutely will not regret.
