Wilderness Systems Thresher 140 Review
Finding an all weather, all water boat that is fitted out with the best technology available can be a tricky business. One thing is for sure, it’s that for both beginners and experts the Wilderness Systems Thresher 140 could be the answer to your prayers. To put it bluntly, this is a high-end, high-performance kayak, that is excellent value, and is one of only a few kayaks that can fit such a variety of needs.
The hull on the thresher is fast and efficient, while still being stable enough to handle open water with ease. While an average kayak is optimised for speed, agility, and stability, fishing kayaks have slightly different priorities that also need to be maximised – like storage and accessibility, as well as a maximum weight capacity, as hopefully by the end of the day, you’ll be coming back to shore with significantly more in the boat than when you left. The Thresher has above average capacity, so can accommodate big guys catching big fish. And with increased capacity comes increased storage – with a huge covered bow hatch, a rectangular storage hatch in the center of the vessel, AND an open rear tank well. Three big, separate containers really pile on the pressure to bring home some pretty gnarly fish. While storage – though not to this extent – is pretty standard in a fishing kayak, the Thresher also has some cutting edge, state of the art features. One of these features is the Flex Pod OS, which is a removable console for electronic fish finders, and can also store your battery and cables. You can feel safe tackling the ocean, even in choppy weather, as there are huge rails that ensure you kayak retains stability in the waves and swells, however this proves itself as an awesome all rounder boat, as the bow and stern are both rockered and keeled, which means the Thresher is capable of gliding gracefully – whether that’s on a still water lake, or just to make your way back to shore. The center pod console can fit rods up to 8ft.
This kayak is outfitted with heaps of awesome features just waiting to be thoroughly explored before you head out exploring on it. The PROS for this kayak obviously include the awesome colours it’s available in, as well as the fact that it’s largely agreed as being the best all around kayak in its price range – so for anyone looking for an all around kayak, with about the right budget, should literally look no further, call off the dogs, as the hunt is over: this is absolutely for you. A couple of the CONS are that better seats are available on other models, though this one is still miles better than a basic one, and for all the fancy extras that come with the boat, it is heavier than other boats of around the same size – so if you’re going to try and get it on a roof rack without kayak cradles, you may want to test your strength first.
